Mandalorian - Razor Crest

Writer's picture: Deano SmithDeano Smith

NOTES ON VIDEO:

One of the exciting things about making the Mandelorian was that they were making a new spaceship.

They were leaning towards world war 2 aesthetics for the ship

Inspired from military style aircrafts

Shiny alluminium warplane look

Needed the shine to work in different environments

Model was around 18 inches and 20 inches

Model was 3d printed

Made mockups to test different processes on

The mould was created with a partline along the wing edge for an obvious top and bottom

Models Needed to look aged

Models are easier to use and make nowadays because of advaned tech like 3D printers

Motion control system is needed for the model to move properly and sway to look realistic.

Didn't have enough time to change things to show it off at 'Celebration'

Models move along a track to give a flying effect.

Made a model that could be shot from many different sides by the film day.

Use cinema projectors to project imagery like desert or sky, so the right lighting is projected onto the model.

The actual model is has very little difference to the cg model.

Everyone was hands on deck to make the best imagery possible.

All playing like with the ships as if they were kids again

Conclusion:

This video has really opened my eyes and has really educated me on all that goes into making a spaceship model and they really don't have much time to complete it, so many people need to work together and coordinate to create the model, and the outcome is phenomenal.
