Storyboarding - Composition

Composition - Is a tool to help better visualize the story and narrative.


Rule of Thirds - Is a technique used to break up the frame into 3 sections. We can then use these sections and their border to position our primary elements such as a character as well as any secondary elements like background objects.


Centre Framing - Is a useful tool to help draw attention directly to the primary element in your frame. This may be needed if your element is in a distracting / busy setting or likewise if you have a character with something important to convey.


Frame within the frame - This is another useful tool to draw attention directly to the primary object by housing them within natural borders in the frame.


This can also be used to illustrate emotion such as imprisonment or isolation.


Scale - The scale of an object can help to illustrate its importance and power however it can also be used to simply illustrate where the action is taking place.


Direction - This is important, it helps to maintain continuity as well as flow in each scene. Think about the important elements you have in your scene and how a character can help draw attention to them.

We had to take this short piece of script and create 3 single frame iterations illustrating how this conversation could be presented:

When I got feedback, I was told there was too much empty / unused space, so I made one last iteration, taking the criticism into consideration:
